COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Nursing at La Trobe University requires students to complete 360 credit points, consisting of 300 credit points of core subjects, including 800 hours of clinical placement, and 60 credit points of minor or elective subjects. The three-year program is designed to develop professional nursing knowledge, clinical skills, and the ability to provide safe, evidence-based, and compassionate healthcare. In the first year, students build essential foundations through studies in anatomy and physiology, professional nursing practice, healthcare systems, nursing studies, and First Nations health, while completing academic integrity and Indigenous cultural literacy modules. The second year expands students’ clinical knowledge through subjects covering primary healthcare, mental health nursing, and advanced professional nursing practice, alongside elective or minor options that allow further specialization. In the final year, students complete advanced professional practice and a capstone experience, developing expertise in evidence-based nursing care, leadership, and clinical governance. The curriculum integrates theoretical learning with extensive clinical placements, preparing students to manage diverse healthcare situations across hospitals, communities, and other health settings. Students develop important skills in communication, critical thinking, leadership, decision-making, and patient-centred care. Graduates are equipped with the professional competencies required to enter the nursing workforce and apply for registration as Registered Nurses, contributing effectively to healthcare delivery and improved patient outcomes.
