COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Laws (Honours)/Bachelor of Arts at La Trobe University requires the completion of 600 credit points over five years of full-time study. The curriculum combines professional legal education with an Arts major, allowing students to develop expertise in law while exploring areas such as politics, sociology, history, philosophy, languages, and media studies. The degree structure includes 360 credit points of Law subjects and 240 credit points of Arts subjects, including a 120 credit point Arts major and additional Arts electives, minors, or a second major. The Law component covers foundational and advanced legal areas including dispute resolution, legal institutions, criminal law, public law, contract law, constitutional law, evidence, criminal procedure, property law, company law, and specialised legal electives. Students develop practical legal abilities in advocacy, negotiation, mediation, legal research, writing, and applying legal principles to real-world situations. The Arts component strengthens critical thinking, communication, cultural awareness, and analytical skills through interdisciplinary study. Students can enhance their professional experience through internships, work-integrated learning, community legal placements, law clinics, mooting competitions, and overseas study opportunities. The program prepares graduates for careers as solicitors, barristers, government lawyers, policy professionals, corporate consultants, legal advisors, and professionals working in community and social justice sectors.
