COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Health Information Management at La Trobe University requires students to complete 360 credit points, all of which are core subjects designed to develop expertise in health information management, digital health, and healthcare systems. The three-year program begins with foundational studies in human biosciences, medical terminology, healthcare in Australia, health information management, digital health, data analytics, health classification, and statistics, alongside academic integrity and Indigenous cultural literacy modules. These subjects provide students with a strong understanding of healthcare environments, medical language, data management, and the principles of health information systems. In the second year, students build advanced knowledge in health classification, health data, healthcare funding, statistics, health information systems analysis and design, human pathophysiology, health information governance, hospital professional practice, and health database fundamentals. These subjects develop practical skills in managing, analyzing, and protecting healthcare information while supporting informed decision-making and quality healthcare delivery. The final year focuses on advanced professional practice, integrating theoretical knowledge with practical experience through industry-based learning and specialized subjects that prepare students for leadership roles in health information management. Throughout the program, students gain expertise in health data analysis, clinical coding, information governance, digital health technologies, and healthcare management, ensuring they graduate with the technical, analytical, and professional skills required for careers in hospitals, government agencies, healthcare organizations, and health information services.
