COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Education (Secondary) at La Trobe University requires students to complete a total of 480 credit points to qualify for the degree. The course consists of 120 credit points of core education subjects and 360 credit points in the selected Secondary major. The core component provides students with essential knowledge and skills in education theory, teaching methods, curriculum development, assessment practices, student wellbeing, inclusive education, and professional teaching approaches. The 360 credit point Secondary major prepares students to teach in secondary school settings by developing expertise in curriculum areas and teaching specialisations. Students gain an in-depth understanding of adolescent learning, child psychology, classroom management, lesson planning, and strategies for engaging diverse learners. The major allows students to develop two curriculum specialisations from areas such as science, languages, humanities, mathematics, and physical education, supporting flexible career pathways in secondary education. As part of the course requirements, students complete supervised teaching practicum experiences of at least 80 days in secondary school settings, where they apply theoretical knowledge, develop teaching confidence, and gain practical classroom experience. The curriculum prepares graduates with the professional capabilities required to become effective secondary educators who can support student learning, encourage growth, and contribute positively to educational communities.
