COURSE CURRICULUM

The Ecology major within the Bachelor of Biological Sciences consists of 120 credit points and is designed to develop students’ understanding of ecosystems, biodiversity and the interactions between organisms and their environments. The overall degree structure combines core biological science subjects, major studies and flexible learning through electives, minors or additional disciplines. In Level one, students develop foundational knowledge through subjects including Molecules, Genes and Cells, Infections, Pandemics and Epidemics, Animal and Plant Life, Ecology, Evolution and Biodiversity, and Making Sense of Data. Students also complete chemistry studies and begin their Ecology major subjects, building an understanding of biological systems and environmental processes. In Level two, students enhance their scientific skills through Practice of Science and Career Options and Professional Identity while undertaking specialised Ecology subjects focused on biodiversity, ecological relationships, conservation and environmental analysis. Students can broaden their learning through elective subjects or additional areas of study. In Level three, advanced Ecology subjects develop skills in ecological research, field investigation, data interpretation and environmental management. The major emphasises practical observation, scientific reasoning and sustainable approaches to protecting ecosystems. Graduates are prepared for careers in conservation, environmental consulting, wildlife management, ecological research, government agencies and sustainability sectors, applying their knowledge to address biodiversity loss, climate impacts and ecosystem challenges.
