COURSE CURRICULUM

The Botany major within the Bachelor of Biological Sciences consists of 120 credit points and develops students’ understanding of plant biology, ecology and the role of plants in environmental and societal systems. The overall degree structure includes core biological science subjects, core-choice subjects, major studies and additional learning through electives, minors or a second major. In Level one, students establish a strong foundation in biological sciences through subjects including Molecules, Genes and Cells, Infections, Pandemics and Epidemics, Animal and Plant Life, Ecology, Evolution and Biodiversity, and Making Sense of Data. Students also complete chemistry studies to support their understanding of plant processes and begin their Botany major studies. In Level two, students strengthen their scientific skills through Practice of Science and Career Options and Professional Identity while continuing specialised Botany subjects that explore plant structure, function, ecology and biotechnology. Students can also expand their knowledge through elective subjects or additional disciplines. In Level three, students complete advanced Botany subjects that develop expertise in plant biology, research methods, environmental applications and sustainable resource management. The major emphasises scientific investigation, data analysis and practical approaches to understanding plant systems. Graduates are prepared for careers in environmental conservation, plant biotechnology, agriculture, ecological research, sustainability and natural resource management, with skills to address challenges involving biodiversity, food security and environmental change.
