COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biochemistry major within the Bachelor of Biological Sciences consists of 120 credit points and is designed to develop students’ understanding of the molecular and cellular processes that underpin life. The overall degree requires 360 credit points, including core subjects, core-choice subjects, a major, and additional studies through a second major, minor or electives. In Level one, students build a strong scientific foundation through core subjects covering molecules, genes and cells, infections, pandemics and epidemics, animal and plant life, ecology, evolution and biodiversity, and data analysis. Students also complete chemistry studies to support their understanding of biological systems and begin their chosen Biochemistry major subjects. In Level two, students develop scientific skills through subjects such as Practice of Science and Career Options and Professional Identity while advancing their knowledge through specialised Biochemistry studies. Students can also broaden their learning through electives, additional majors or minors. In Level three, students complete advanced Biochemistry subjects that explore molecular mechanisms, cellular processes, laboratory techniques and scientific applications. The major emphasises research skills, critical thinking and practical scientific approaches to solving biological challenges. Graduates are prepared for careers in biotechnology, biomedical research, pharmaceuticals, healthcare and scientific industries, while also gaining a strong foundation for postgraduate study in biological and medical sciences.
