COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts with a major in Sociology requires the completion of 360 credit points over three years of full-time study. Students complete at least one 120-credit-point Arts major, while the remaining 240 credit points can be completed through electives, an additional Arts or non-Arts major, or up to two minors, allowing students to develop a flexible and interdisciplinary study pathway. The Sociology major provides students with a comprehensive understanding of social life, human relationships, institutions, and the processes that shape communities and societies. The curriculum introduces key sociological theories, concepts, and research methods used to analyse contemporary social issues and patterns of social change. Students explore topics including Australian society, popular culture, gender and sexuality, inequality, social conflict, migration, multiculturalism, relationships, emotions, health, mental illness, education, work, sport, gaming, social media, and technology. Through theoretical study and practical research activities, students learn how to investigate social problems, interpret evidence, evaluate policies, and understand the influence of social structures on individuals and groups. The major develops strong skills in critical thinking, research, communication, data interpretation, and problem-solving, enabling students to analyse complex social challenges from diverse perspectives. Graduates are prepared for careers in social research, government, community development, public policy, education, health and welfare services, advocacy, market research, and organizations working to create positive social change.
