COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts with a major in Linguistics requires the completion of 360 credit points over three years of full-time study. Students complete at least one 120-credit-point Arts major, while the remaining 240 credit points can be completed through electives, an additional Arts or non-Arts major, or up to two minors, allowing students to design a flexible and interdisciplinary study program. The Linguistics major provides a systematic study of language and its role in communication, cognition, society, and culture. The curriculum introduces students to key areas of linguistics, including phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, language acquisition, and linguistic diversity. Students explore how languages are structured, how they change over time, and how meaning is created and communicated across different cultural contexts. The major includes the analysis of linguistic data from various languages, including Australian Aboriginal languages, English varieties, European languages, and Asian languages, while applying linguistic theories to real-world communication. Advanced study develops students’ ability to investigate language-related issues through research, critical analysis, and problem-solving approaches. Students gain skills in data interpretation, communication, and detailed analytical thinking that are valuable across many industries. Graduates are prepared for careers in education, professional writing, communication, marketing, language services, research, policy, and other fields where expertise in language and human interaction is highly valued.
