COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts with a major in History requires the completion of 360 credit points over three years of full-time study. Students complete at least one 120-credit-point Arts major, while the remaining 240 credit points can be completed through electives, an additional Arts or non-Arts major, or up to two minors, allowing flexibility to combine History with other areas of study. The History major provides a structured exploration of human societies, events, and ideas from the ancient world to the contemporary era. The curriculum introduces students to historical methods, research practices, and approaches to understanding social, political, cultural, and environmental change across different regions, including Australia, Europe, Asia, the United States, and Latin America. Students examine key themes such as empires, migration, human rights, religion, conflict, identity, sustainability, and the development of modern societies. Advanced subjects allow students to explore specialized topics including Aboriginal history, slavery and human trafficking, genocide and the Holocaust, civil rights, sexuality, food, popular culture, and environmental history. Through analysing primary sources, historical texts, visual materials, and digital media, students develop critical thinking, research, communication, and interpretation skills. The program also encourages students to create new historical perspectives using contemporary methods and technologies. Graduates gain transferable skills suited to careers in education, museums, archives, heritage management, government, research, media, publishing, policy development, and cultural organizations.
