COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts with a major in Environmental Humanities requires the completion of 360 credit points over three years of full-time study. Students complete at least one 120-credit-point Arts major, while the remaining 240 credit points can be completed through electives, an additional Arts or non-Arts major, or up to two minors, allowing flexibility to combine environmental studies with other disciplines. The Environmental Humanities major provides an interdisciplinary curriculum exploring the connections between humans, culture, society, and the natural environment. Students study how historical, philosophical, political, legal, creative, and cultural perspectives shape understandings of environmental change and sustainability. The curriculum introduces key concepts in environmental ethics, climate justice, ecological challenges, human relationships with nature, and responses to global environmental crises. Through subjects drawing from Aboriginal studies, history, philosophy, literature, creative arts, geography, politics, law, and related fields, students develop a broad understanding of environmental issues from multiple viewpoints. Advanced study encourages critical analysis of environmental challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, resource consumption, and social inequalities associated with environmental impacts. Students develop research, communication, problem-solving, and ethical decision-making skills while exploring innovative approaches to creating sustainable relationships between humans and the environment. Graduates are prepared for careers in environmental policy, sustainability, advocacy, education, government, community development, research, cultural organizations, and other fields focused on addressing environmental and social challenges.
