COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts with a major in Creative and Professional Writing requires the completion of 360 credit points over three years of full-time study. Students complete at least one 120-credit-point Arts major, while the remaining 240 credit points can be selected through electives, an additional Arts or non-Arts major, or up to two minors, providing flexibility to combine creative writing with other areas of interest. The Creative and Professional Writing major develops students’ writing skills through a structured sequence of subjects focused on creative practice, literary analysis, and professional communication. Early-level subjects introduce students to writing techniques, storytelling methods, literary traditions, and the relationship between creative expression and cultural contexts. Intermediate and advanced subjects allow students to experiment with genres including short stories, extended fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, and scriptwriting while developing stronger narrative, stylistic, and critical skills. The curriculum emphasizes writing workshops, peer feedback, editing practices, and engagement with contemporary publishing approaches. Students learn to analyse the strategies used by professional writers and apply these insights to their own creative work. The major culminates in the development of a substantial writing portfolio that demonstrates refined creative ability and professional readiness. Through electives and interdisciplinary study, graduates develop adaptable communication, research, editing, and storytelling skills suited to careers in publishing, media, communications, education, marketing, content creation, and creative industries.
