COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Archaeology comprises 360 credit points completed over three academic levels, providing students with a comprehensive foundation in archaeological theory, fieldwork, scientific methods, and heritage management. In the first year, students study core subjects covering human evolution, archaeological methods, ancient civilizations, myths and history, while also completing academic integrity and Indigenous cultural literacy modules. They can further customize their studies through electives, majors, or minors. The second year builds practical and scientific expertise with subjects focusing on past landscapes, archaeological science, excavation techniques, Palaeolithic archaeology, and the anthropology of Aboriginal Australia. Students also choose from specialized options such as sustainability and societal collapse, remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), international study tours, archaeology of death, industry placements, or industry projects, alongside additional electives. The final year emphasizes advanced archaeological knowledge and professional skills through capstone subjects exploring Australia's First Peoples, post-1788 Australian archaeology, artefact management, analysis, and interpretation. Students also develop communication skills by learning how to present historical knowledge effectively and examine the transition from foraging to farming in human societies. Additional electives or major subjects allow further specialization. Overall, the curriculum combines theoretical learning, practical field experience, scientific analysis, cultural awareness, and flexible study options to prepare graduates for careers in archaeology, heritage management, research, and related fields.
