James Cook University’s Master of Teaching and Learning (Secondary) equips you with the essential qualifications, knowledge, and practical skills to enter the teaching profession and meet the diverse needs of secondary school students in both urban and rural communities. This program is designed to develop your ability to design, implement, and critically reflect on teaching practices, ensuring positive learning outcomes for all students. With a strong focus on pedagogy tailored to a wide range of learners, you will gain the expertise needed to teach effectively in tropical, rural, remote, and Indigenous contexts, understanding diverse learning styles and applying appropriate teaching frameworks.Throughout the degree, you will maximise professional experience through structured placements in secondary schools. In the first three phases, you will complete placements alongside your coursework, including a total of 60 days in school settings and 20 integrated coursework days, providing hands-on experience in planning and delivering lessons. In the final phase, you will undertake a 20-day capstone placement, either in a school or through a community-based service-learning project. These experiences give you firsthand exposure to leading learning, classroom management, and curriculum delivery, particularly in the context of Northern Queensland’s regional, rural, and remote communitiesStudents tailor the degree to teach in two learning areas of the Australian Curriculum for Years 7-12. Graduates emerge ready to direct curriculum, assessment, and differentiated learning opportunities, enhancing outcomes for all students, including those from diverse cultural, linguistic, and socio-economic backgrounds or with specific learning needs.
