COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science (Professional) at James Cook University is a flexible, two-year, full-time program designed to equip students with advanced scientific knowledge and practical skills to address complex environmental challenges. Throughout the course, students complete advanced coursework subjects and have the opportunity to undertake an independent research project or apply their skills in an industry-based project, providing a pathway toward a PhD by research. This professional approach ensures graduates are well-prepared to evaluate global environmental issues and design innovative, sustainable, and holistic solutions.Students can choose from seven majors, including Aquaculture Science and Technology, Environmental Earth Science, Environmental Management, Fisheries Science and Management, Geology, Global Change Biology, and Tropical Biology and Conservation. Each major provides specialised elective subjects within the discipline and allows students to broaden their expertise by selecting complementary subjects from other disciplines. Cairns campus offers four of these majors—Environmental Earth Science, Environmental Management, Global Change Biology, and Tropical Biology and Conservation—while all majors are available at the Townsville campus.The program emphasizes hands-on experience and professional skill development through work-integrated learning (WIL) activities, such as placements, fieldwork, internships, or industry-partnered projects. The required WIL hours vary by major, providing opportunities for practical exposure to real-world challenges and fostering professional networks that enhance career prospects.Students gain access to world-class facilities, including the Marine and Aquaculture Research Facility, field stations, and analytical laboratories, and benefit from supervision by research and industry experts. Graduates develop strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills, as well as a comprehensive understanding of environmental systems and sustainable management strategies. By the completion of the Master of Science (Professional), students are prepared for careers in research, environmental management, conservation, policy, and industry, with the ability to deliver impactful solutions to contemporary ecological and societal challenges.
