COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Medical Science at James Cook University is designed for students seeking to build on their existing knowledge and experience in medical, biomedical, or clinical studies. The program equips students with advanced theories, techniques, and practical skills to improve human and animal health, particularly in regional, rural, remote, and Indigenous community settings.This flexible program offers three majors: Clinical Sciences, Future Leaders in Tropical Research, and Medical Laboratory Science, allowing students to tailor their studies toward careers as Clinical Measurements Scientists, Medical Laboratory Scientists, or medical research scientists. Throughout the degree, students gain a deep understanding of medical science disciplines such as haematology, clinical biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, bioengineering, pathobiology, and pathophysiology, alongside clinical sciences including cardiac, respiratory, and neurophysiology. Applied learning in biostatistics and epidemiology ensures graduates can contribute effectively to public health initiatives within their chosen field.In the second year, students undertake a small-scale research project relevant to tropical health and medicine, developing skills in project planning, proposal writing, and implementation. Professional placements in clinical and medical laboratory settings, including private and public hospitals as well as JCU’s advanced laboratory facilities, provide invaluable hands-on experience and industry engagement.Throughout the program, students work closely with leading experts in medical and clinical laboratory science, establishing professional networks and connections that can support future career opportunities. Graduates are highly sought-after nationally and internationally for their ability to apply specialist skills to promote health in diverse communities, particularly in the Tropics.The Master of Medical Science prepares students to become medical researchers, clinical scientists, or medical scientists with the expertise and practical experience needed to make a meaningful impact on community health, research, and clinical practice.
