The Master of Marine Biology at James Cook University is an interdisciplinary program designed to provide students with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in marine science, preparing graduates for careers in research, conservation, and environmental management. The degree combines hands-on training, advanced research experience, and real-world professional development, leveraging JCU’s unique tropical locations, including the Orpheus Island Research Station on the Great Barrier Reef, mangrove forests, seagrass meadows, and adjacent coastal systems.Students develop expertise across five key areas sought after by marine employers: marine biology, mathematics/statistics/modelling, environmental science and management, marine and microbial ecology, and cross-disciplinary studies. The program emphasizes applied research, quantitative analysis, and data-driven decision-making, while fostering skills in science communication, problem-solving, and collaboration with leading researchers.The Master’s degree offers two pathways: a Research major, enabling students to undertake a year-long, in-depth project with guidance from academic and industry supervisors, and a Professional Internship option, providing a three-month placement with government agencies, research institutions, or industry partners. Students gain practical experience in fields such as conservation science, fisheries management, eco-tourism, big data, science communication, and policy development.Throughout the program, students benefit from JCU’s world-class facilities, including the Marine and Aquaculture Research Facility (MARF), the Advanced Analytical Centre, and high-performance computing resources, as well as the expertise of researchers from TropWATER and CSTFA.
