COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Data Science at James Cook University provides students with the opportunity to apply advanced data science skills in tropical, regional, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander contexts. Delivered by experienced data scientists, the program integrates industry expertise through partnerships with SAS, including SAS certification and access to the SAS Data Science Academy. Students develop the ability to exercise professional judgment in varied circumstances and undertake a substantial research-based capstone project, building a portfolio to demonstrate their expertise.Graduates emerge with comprehensive knowledge of recent developments and contemporary challenges in data science, gaining skills in machine learning, data mining, algorithm development, and advanced modelling. The program also equips students with practical experience in applying computing languages and computational tools for data acquisition, queries, management, analysis, and visualisation. With access to senior industry contacts and real-world projects, students develop enterprise-ready skills that prepare them for leadership roles in data analytics, research, and technology-driven industries.The degree is delivered innovatively across twelve study periods, with an additional externally completed subject in specified periods, enabling students to complete sixteen subjects over two full-time years. This structure allows for focused learning, continuous skill development, and engagement with applied projects throughout the course. By the end of the program, graduates are prepared to tackle complex data challenges across diverse sectors, adapt to emerging technologies, and contribute effectively to data-driven decision-making in professional and research contexts.
