COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours) at JCU prepares students to diagnose, treat, manage, and prevent disease across a wide range of companion, production, aquatic, and native animals. The program builds strong foundational knowledge in veterinary science while developing specialised skills in rural and tropical contexts. Students learn to promote and optimise the health and welfare of animals, communities, and the environment through studies in epidemiology, zoonoses, public health, and One Health approaches. The curriculum equips students to analyse, formulate, and communicate solutions to complex animal and public health problems, as well as implement and monitor treatment and management plans.Hands-on learning is central to the degree, with practical experience provided at JCU’s on-campus Veterinary and Emergency Centre and Hospital, Fletcherview Station—a working cattle station—and through placements in diverse urban and rural veterinary practices. Students observe and engage in consultations with clients, carers, animal owners, and communities, gaining experience across multiple veterinary settings. JCU’s Rural Access Scheme (RAS) provides additional opportunities for students from rural or remote areas of Queensland to secure a place in the program, supporting the university’s commitment to regional communities.Throughout the degree, students complete a range of clinical placements, particularly in the final two years, preparing them to work effectively in multidisciplinary veterinary teams. Graduates are equipped to deliver safe and effective veterinary care, identify and address animal and public health issues, and lead in the application of sustainable solutions in tropical, rural, and urban environments. Students must meet inherent requirements, which outline the skills, attributes, and behaviours necessary to successfully complete the program and uphold professional standards.
