COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Speech Pathology at JCU prepares students to enhance the quality of life of their future clients by assessing, diagnosing, and managing communication and swallowing difficulties across diverse populations. The program provides a strong foundation in speech pathology theory and practice, underpinned by interdisciplinary studies in anatomy, linguistics, psychology, medicine, education, and communication. Students develop a holistic understanding of healthcare, enabling them to work with individuals across the lifespan and in varied contexts, from clinical settings to community and educational environments. The degree is accredited by Speech Pathology Australia, ensuring graduates are eligible for Practising Membership, with qualifications recognised internationally in countries including the UK, USA, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand.Students gain advanced knowledge of the speech chain, exploring communication from the physiological, acoustic, and linguistic perspectives, alongside subjects such as lifespan development, speech and language impairments, and relevant anatomy and physiology. The curriculum also covers health systems, epidemiology, and healthcare service delivery, with a focus on health promotion, particularly in remote and Indigenous communities. Hands-on professional experience is a central component, with multiple placements in urban, regional, and remote settings, including hospitals, clinics, and disability services. These placements expose students to clients with a wide range of communication and swallowing challenges, including conditions such as stroke, autism, voice disorders, cleft palate, and cancer-related impairments.Graduates are equipped with practical, professional, and interpersonal skills to deliver culturally responsive, client-centred services, including preventive, educational, and promotional programs. The program includes an embedded Honours component in the fourth year, with professional and research streams available. The professional stream involves collaborative research projects, while the research stream allows independent study and thesis development, providing pathways to postgraduate study or higher research degrees.
