COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science at JCU provides a flexible and immersive pathway for students to pursue scientific study aligned with their interests, aptitude, and career goals. With ten majors to choose from, students begin by building a solid foundation in core scientific principles before specialising in one or two disciplines that align with industry opportunities. The program also allows for additional minors and elective subjects, offering breadth and versatility in knowledge and experience. Small class sizes foster strong connections with peers and academics, while providing opportunities to develop professional networks and employability skills relevant to each discipline. Hands-on learning is a key feature, with real-world projects and research conducted in unique locations such as the Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree Rainforest, and the Australian Outback. Contemporary facilities, including The Science Place, the Orpheus Island Research Station, and the Daintree Rainforest Observatory, support practical, evidence-based learning and research. Students gain confidence in designing and conducting laboratory and field experiments, learning to select appropriate methods, techniques, and tools under the guidance of leading academics and industry experts. The program equips graduates with advanced scientific knowledge and skills applicable to a wide range of professional settings, including the global Tropics. Townsville-based students who have completed at least one year may apply for positions with the Australian Public Service Academy Campus, offering opportunities in Digital and Data fields that can lead to full-time employment after graduation. Throughout the degree, students are expected to meet inherent requirements, which include the abilities, attributes, skills, and behaviours necessary to successfully complete the course, maintain academic integrity, and meet professional standards.
