COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Physiotherapy at JCU equips students with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience needed to help clients restore mobility, function, and overall quality of life. Students learn to assess and diagnose issues with human movement and function, then plan and implement treatment programs to address dysfunction caused by illness, injury, or ageing. The program takes a holistic approach, integrating the study of human anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and exercise prescription with evidence-based physiotherapy practices. From the cellular level to entire human systems, students explore how body structures and functions relate to health, illness, and injury, while also developing proficiency in fundamental physiotherapy techniques such as massage, exercise prescription, and biomechanical principles. From the first year, students gain practical experience, learning professional communication skills and the operational aspects of allied health practice. Hands-on learning is emphasized at the JCU Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Clinic at the Townsville Bebegu Yumba campus, where students observe demonstrations from expert lecturers and apply their theoretical knowledge in practice. Clinical placements extend this practical learning into urban, rural, and remote settings, providing exposure to diverse patient populations and preparing students to deliver effective healthcare in any environment. By combining rigorous academic study with immersive, real-world experience, graduates are prepared to provide safe, client-centred, and collaborative physiotherapy care. The program also uniquely equips students to work in rural and remote communities, including with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations, ensuring graduates are capable of addressing healthcare needs across a broad range of contexts both within Australia and internationally.
