COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) program offers an accelerated pathway to a career in pharmacy, emphasizing both scientific knowledge and practical experience. From the first year, students build a solid foundation in key scientific principles, including chemistry, biology, physiology, pharmacology, and anatomy, guided by experienced pharmacists and academics. High-school chemistry is no longer a prerequisite, though students without prior chemistry study complete a Preparatory Chemistry course to ensure they are well-prepared. Alongside academic learning, students gain hands-on experience through placements starting in the first year, allowing them to apply their knowledge in real-world settings. From the second year onward, the curriculum blends practice-based and research-focused subjects, including research methodology, diagnosis, and treatment of common self-limiting conditions, management of acute and chronic diseases, and preventative healthcare strategies at both individual and community levels. Students also engage in individual and group research projects under the mentorship of experienced pharmacist researchers, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The final year emphasizes clinical practice, with students working in community pharmacies, hospitals, and low-resource settings, contributing to healthcare delivery in regional, remote, and Indigenous communities. With 644 hours of placement—the highest of any undergraduate pharmacy degree in Australia—students develop confidence, expertise, and a collaborative approach essential for professional practice. Graduates are prepared to work across diverse contexts, including metropolitan, rural, remote, Indigenous, and tropical settings, with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience to make a meaningful impact on patient care. This comprehensive program ensures that students not only understand the theoretical underpinnings of pharmacy but are also ready to provide high-quality healthcare services immediately upon graduation.
