COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Occupational Therapy at James Cook University equips students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to help individuals achieve their goals in daily life activities. The program focuses on understanding clients’ potential and applying therapeutic approaches to maximize participation in activities related to self-care, work, school, play, and leisure. Students build a strong foundation in human anatomy and physiology while learning about the psychosocial, biomechanical, neurological, and contextual factors influencing occupation. The course also covers lifespan development, health promotion, and healthcare principles.From the first year, students develop essential communication and practical skills for effective occupational therapy and allied health practice. The program emphasizes understanding the broader role of occupational therapists in the health sector through engagement with communities. Practical learning is a core component, with hands-on training at the JCU Health Occupational Therapy Clinic in Townsville and professional placements with industry partners. Students gain experience in urban, rural, and remote settings, developing a broad range of generalist skills.Over the duration of the degree, students complete more than 1,000 hours of professional work experience, ensuring they graduate ready for practice. This combination of theoretical knowledge, practical skill development, and real-world experience prepares graduates to confidently support clients across diverse contexts, making a meaningful impact in their lives and communities.
