COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management at James Cook University (JCU) prepares students to understand and manage the complex interactions between people and the environment. The program combines knowledge of biological, physical, social, economic, and political systems to address contemporary environmental challenges. Students develop analytical, problem-solving, and practical skills to design and implement sustainable solutions, drawing on JCU’s world-class research and expertise.Practical, hands-on learning is integral to the course. Students engage in laboratory classes, field-based studies, professional placements, and work-integrated learning (WIL) projects. The required WIL hours vary depending on the chosen major, ranging from 148 to 284 hours. These experiences provide opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world environmental management, conservation, and policy contexts while building professional networks.Students can choose a single or double major from four specialised areas. Biodiversity Assessment and Management focuses on assessing and managing terrestrial and aquatic species, ecology, and biodiversity, with fieldwork in World-Heritage listed environments. Coast to Coral emphasises marine ecology, coral reef management, and coastal ecosystems, developing skills for innovative conservation solutions. Land and Water Management covers physical geosciences, hydrology, soil science, and natural hazards, with field-based learning in diverse landscapes including the Great Barrier Reef catchments. People and Place takes a human-centred approach to resource management, exploring anthropology, geography, Indigenous land and water management techniques, and stakeholder collaboration in environmental protection.Graduates of the program are equipped to work in environmental consultancy, conservation, government agencies, research organisations, and non-profit sectors. The combination of specialised knowledge, practical experience, and professional skill development ensures that students are prepared to address environmental challenges, manage ecosystems sustainably, and contribute meaningfully to environmental policy and management initiatives.
