COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Engineering at James Cook University (JCU) equips students with advanced technical knowledge in mathematics, physics, and science, while fostering analytical and problem-solving skills to create innovative engineering solutions. A key component of the degree is work-integrated learning, which includes placements, fieldwork, internships, and industry-partnered projects. Students are required to complete a minimum of 480 hours of practical experience, with additional fieldwork for those pursuing the Chemistry major. This hands-on approach ensures graduates are career-ready and able to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world contexts.The program offers six engineering majors, each tailored to specific industry demands. Chemical Engineering, available at the Townsville campus, focuses on transforming raw materials into products using principles of chemistry, physics, mathematics, and sustainability, with career opportunities in water treatment, energy production, food manufacturing, and minerals processing. Civil Engineering, also at Townsville, prepares students to design and manage infrastructure projects, assess environmental impacts, and enhance community engagement.Electrical and Electronic Engineering, offered at both Cairns and Townsville, teaches students to design and maintain electrical energy systems, with expertise in renewable energy, circuit theory, and power systems. Electronic Systems and Internet of Things Engineering, available at Cairns, focuses on electronics, sensor technologies, AI, cloud computing, and smart technologies, preparing students for high-demand tech roles.Maritime Engineering is offered at Cairns for the first two years, after which students transfer to the University of Tasmania to complete the Bachelor of Maritime Engineering (Specialisation), specialising in naval architecture or ocean engineering. Mechanical Engineering, available at Townsville, teaches principles of mechanics and thermodynamics to design, manufacture, and maintain machines, applying knowledge of thermofluid mechanics and materials strength.Through a combination of theoretical study, hands-on learning, and industry placements, graduates of JCU’s Bachelor of Engineering are well-prepared to enter diverse engineering fields, including infrastructure, energy, technology, maritime, and manufacturing, with the skills and confidence to make meaningful contributions nationally and globally.
