COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Education (Primary) at James Cook University (JCU) prepares students to become skilled and reflective educators, capable of establishing positive and engaging learning environments for primary school students from Prep to Year Six. The program focuses on developing practical teaching skills, including creative instructional methods, classroom management, inclusive teaching practices, and strategies to foster student engagement and academic success. Students also learn to support Indigenous education outcomes and adapt their teaching to the diverse cultural and social contexts of urban, regional, rural, and remote communities.Practical experience is a central component of the degree. Students begin gaining professional experience from their first year through placements in state, Catholic, and independent schools. Over the course of the program, students complete 85 days of practical placement, culminating in a mandatory five-day intensive Professional Orientation Program in the final year, ensuring they are fully prepared to enter the teaching profession.The program offers flexible study options. The Bachelor of Education (Primary) Online allows students to study one subject at a time in six-week blocks, with up to six subjects per year and 10-week breaks, enabling completion in five years or acceleration in four. Additionally, the program is part of the Remote Area Teacher Education Program (RATEP) pathway, which supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students studying in their local communities through partnerships with TAFE Queensland and the Queensland Department of Education. RATEP provides access to local teacher coordinators and community-based support to increase the number of registered Indigenous teachers in Queensland.Graduates of the Bachelor of Education (Primary) are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience to make a meaningful impact in schools and communities, promoting lifelong learning and student success. The combination of classroom theory, professional placements, flexible study pathways, and cultural responsiveness ensures graduates are confident and well-prepared to embark on a rewarding teaching career.
