The Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) at James Cook University (JCU) provides a strong foundation in dental science while addressing the pressing oral health needs of underserved communities, particularly in rural, remote, tropical, and Indigenous contexts. From the beginning of your studies, you will be guided by experienced and supportive professionals who help you develop the essential knowledge, technical skills, and patient-care abilities required to become a competent and compassionate dentist.The program combines theoretical learning with practical training to ensure you graduate career-ready. You will study the foundational sciences of anatomy, physiology, pathology, and oral biology alongside core dental disciplines, while also learning about the social, cultural, and environmental factors that shape oral health outcomes. A key focus is placed on health promotion and preventative care, ensuring you are equipped to not only treat but also educate and empower communities to maintain oral health.Practical training is central to your learning. JCU’s world-class dental teaching complex houses a state-of-the-art clinical simulation laboratory, where you will first develop and refine your technical skills. These are then applied in real-world settings as you diagnose, manage, and perform dental work for patients under supervision. Extensive clinical placements in JCU’s dental clinics and external sites across northern Queensland and beyond provide authentic experiences, exposing you to the diverse needs of regional, rural, and Indigenous populations.The program also highlights JCU’s strong commitment to improving access to oral healthcare in regional and remote areas through initiatives such as the Rural Access Scheme (RAS). This pathway offers eligible students from rural or remote parts of Queensland the opportunity to study dentistry at JCU, further strengthening the pipeline of skilled professionals for underserved communities.
