COURSE CURRICULUM

The Advanced Science program at James Cook University (JCU) offers students a flexible, research-driven curriculum with a focus on work-integrated learning (WIL) through placements, fieldwork, internships, or industry-partnered projects. The required WIL hours vary by major: Aquaculture Science and Technology (8 hours), Geology (80 hours), Marine Biology (82–85 hours), and Zoology and Ecology (233–256 hours), providing hands-on experience that complements classroom learning and develops professional skills.Students can choose from a wide range of majors, each providing specialised knowledge and practical training. The Aquaculture Science and Technology major offers access to JCU’s Marine and Aquaculture Research Facility, teaching sustainable practices for breeding, rearing, and harvesting aquatic species, as well as biodiversity and nutrition. Chemistry majors benefit from award-winning laboratories and industry connections, gaining expertise in analytical, synthetic, organic, and inorganic chemistry, as well as reaction kinetics and mechanisms. The Data Science major equips students with skills in data visualisation, Big Data, machine learning, and algorithm development, preparing them to address contemporary problems.Environmental Earth Science focuses on fieldwork and research in Far North Queensland, studying the impacts of human development on climate, hydrology, soil, and coastal catchments. Geology emphasizes critical mineral exploration, environmental processes, and industry-linked research opportunities, preparing graduates for careers in mining, renewable energy, and environmental assessment. Marine Biology students study the Great Barrier Reef and can participate in hands-on research at the Orpheus Island Field Station, gaining expertise in marine ecosystem management and human-environment interactions.Other majors include Mathematics, providing advanced analytical, quantitative, and modelling skills; Molecular and Cell Biology, offering hands-on laboratory and fieldwork experience in genetics, biotechnology, and biochemistry; Physics, covering energy, quantum mechanics, relativity, thermodynamics, and experimental techniques; and Zoology and Ecology, focusing on rainforest and biodiversity studies, behavioural ecology, conservation biology, and ecological modelling.
