COURSE CURRICULUM

The course units included in this qualification offer a comprehensive set of skills and knowledge required to provide effective support in aged care, disability, and community service environments. Learners are trained to deliver person-centred care through individualised support plans while working within established legal and ethical frameworks. Key competencies include supporting people with chronic diseases, dementia, and life-limiting illnesses, as well as providing care using a palliative approach. Students also learn to foster strong communication and respectful relationships with clients from diverse backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.Additionally, the qualification covers the practical aspects of care such as promoting independence and well-being, maintaining hygiene and infection control, recognising healthy body systems, and responding to first aid emergencies. Participants are also taught to work safely in environments involving direct client care, comply with WHS standards, and coach others in job tasks. Emphasis is placed on building supportive relationships with carers and families and empowering clients through rights-based service delivery.Workplace readiness is further enhanced through training in planning and costing of services, receiving and maintaining stock, and using digital communication tools within healthcare contexts. The course ensures that learners are prepared to handle real-life scenarios, make informed decisions, and respond effectively to various client needs while maintaining a high standard of professionalism. Importantly, completion of this qualification requires students to undertake a minimum of 120 hours of work placement, allowing them to apply learned skills in real settings under supervision. This practical experience ensures graduates are job-ready for a variety of roles in residential, community, or home care environments, aligning with current Australian standards and legislation in the healthcare and community support industries.
