COURSE CURRICULUM

The Graduate Diploma of Research Studies in Science offered in Trimester 1, 2027, is structured as an 80 credit point program designed to prepare students for entry into higher degree research programs such as the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The program includes core research courses that focus on research methods, scientific writing, and project development. Students will engage in a supervised independent research project that allows them to apply their learning to a specific area of scientific inquiry. Progress throughout the program is monitored by the Program Director or a designated academic supervisor, ensuring students are supported as they build their research capabilities. In addition to core subjects, students are required to select a major area of specialization, which helps tailor the research experience to their academic and career interests. The available major options for 2027 include Applied Mathematics, Archaeological Science, Biomedical Science, Bioscience, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Forensic Science, Marine Science, and Physics. Each major provides advanced discipline-specific knowledge and research training that is essential for conducting focused scientific investigations. These majors also involve seminars or elective courses relevant to the selected field, enhancing the student’s theoretical and practical understanding. The structure of the program ensures a comprehensive foundation in both general and specialized research skills. It also offers a flexible framework that supports academic progression based on student performance. Successful completion of the diploma, with appropriate academic results, allows students to apply for further research study in either an MPhil or PhD program, subject to university requirements. For those who choose not to continue with the full diploma, an exit award in the form of a Graduate Certificate in Research Studies in Science is also available after the completion of specified components. This makes the program both a gateway and a stand-alone qualification in research training.
