ABOUT UNIVERSITY
Griffith University is a public research university located in South East Queensland, Australia. Established in 1971 and officially opened in 1975, the university was named after Sir Samuel Walker Griffith, a key figure in Australian history who served as both Premier of Queensland and the first Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia. He was also the principal author of the Australian Constitution and played a major role in the Federation of Australia. Originally launched with a single campus at Nathan and just 451 students, Griffith has since expanded to five campuses located in Gold Coast, Nathan, Logan, South Bank, and Mount Gravatt. A sixth campus is currently being developed in the Treasury Building in Brisbane’s Central Business District and is expected to open in 2027. The university now enrolls around 50,000 students from more than 130 countries and offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and research programs across disciplines such as business, law, science, health, education, engineering, and the arts. Griffith University is a member of the Innovative Research Universities (IRU) group and is recognized as a verdant university, known for its campuses set in natural bushland. The idea for the university began in the mid-1960s when land was reserved at Nathan for a future institution to help meet growing demand in humanities and social sciences. Initially considered an extension of the University of Queensland, the vision shifted in 1970 when Theodor Bray was asked by the Queensland Government to lead the creation of a new university. The institution was officially recognized with the passing of the Griffith University Act in 1971. Since then, it has grown significantly in both physical presence and academic reputation, offering diverse programs and serving a large international student population.
