COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Occupational Therapy at Flinders University is a 72-unit program designed to prepare students for professional practice as occupational therapists. The program equips graduates with the knowledge, skills, and professional competencies needed to support the health, participation, and well-being of individuals, groups, and communities through engagement in everyday activities. Students progressively develop expertise in evaluation and practice of occupational therapy, inter-professional practice, and contemporary issues in occupational therapy, ensuring they are prepared for the complexities of modern healthcare settings.A central component of the program is extensive fieldwork, providing practical experience and ensuring graduates achieve competency in professional practice. Students undertake three full-time clinical placements totaling 1,000 hours, in accordance with the accreditation standards of the Occupational Therapy Council of Australia. Placements are eight weeks each, with at least one required in a rural or remote area. These experiences allow students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world clinical environments, develop professional skills, and work effectively with diverse populations. Placements may be scheduled outside normal teaching weeks, and students receive guidance on placement arrangements at the commencement of their studies.Practical experience requirements include obtaining a National Police Certificate for working with children and/or vulnerable groups and undergoing Department of Communities and Social Inclusion screenings for child-related employment, aged care, vulnerable person employment, and disability services employment. Students must also meet immunisation requirements in line with relevant state or territory standards and comply with any additional requirements of private providers.Graduates of the Master of Occupational Therapy emerge as skilled, competent, and confident practitioners capable of working across metropolitan, rural, and remote settings. The program ensures they are prepared to deliver evidence-based occupational therapy services, collaborate within interdisciplinary teams, and contribute meaningfully to the health, participation, and well-being of the communities they serve.
