COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Science (Conservation and Wildlife Management) at Flinders University offers a structured curriculum designed to equip students with the scientific knowledge, practical skills, and research experience needed to protect and manage biodiversity effectively. In the first year, students establish a broad foundation in biological sciences with core topics such as Biodiversity and Conservation, Evolution of Biological Diversity, and the Molecular Basis of Life. Elective topics, including Animal Behaviour, and additional choices in Chemistry, Earth Sciences, or Computing allow students to begin tailoring their studies to individual interests. This year combines theoretical knowledge with essential scientific skills, preparing students for more specialised study. In the second year, students deepen their expertise with core topics in Genetics, Evolution and Biodiversity, Ecology, Animal Diversity, Geographical Information Systems, and Experimental Design and Statistics. A range of electives allows students to explore complementary fields and develop interdisciplinary skills. This stage emphasises both analytical and practical approaches, enabling students to assess ecological systems, monitor species, and understand the impacts of human activities on ecosystems. The third year focuses on advanced study and applied research, covering core topics such as Conservation Biology and Restoration Ecology, Plant and Algal Diversity, Vertebrate Palaeontology, Marine and Freshwater Biology, Integrative Physiology of Animals and Plants, Human Impacts and Biodiversity, and Ecological Genetics. Elective topics provide further flexibility, allowing students to specialise and broaden their expertise. Hands-on learning and fieldwork are integral to developing practical conservation and wildlife management skills. In the honours year, high-performing students undertake an individually supervised research project, further developing research skills and scientific expertise in a chosen area. Students gain advanced knowledge, practical experience, and professional competencies required for careers in conservation, wildlife management, environmental consultancy, ecological research, or for progression to higher degrees by research.
