COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Information Technology (Machine Learning) equips students with both the theoretical foundations and practical expertise needed to design and develop advanced machine learning and artificial intelligence solutions. In the first year, students are introduced to the fundamentals of computing, computer programming, database design, networks, cybersecurity, and professional skills, alongside data science. These topics establish a solid grounding in core IT concepts while also building the analytical and problem-solving abilities necessary for more advanced studies. In the second year, learning progresses to intermediate programming and database concepts, as well as computer networks, human factors in computing, and systems software. This stage also marks the introduction of specialist subjects in neural networks, machine learning, and natural language processing, enabling students to understand how intelligent systems are designed and applied in real-world contexts. By the third year, the focus shifts toward advanced applications, integration of knowledge, and workplace readiness. Students engage with topics such as advanced programming, cloud and distributed computing, information security, software testing and quality assurance, and project management. They also study specialist units in estimation, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, further strengthening their technical and applied expertise. A key feature of the final year is the opportunity to undertake Flinders’ best-practice IT practicum or an applied project, which places students in industry teams to gain professional experience, solve real-world challenges, and develop collaborative skills highly valued by employers. Graduates of this program are well prepared for a wide range of roles in the rapidly growing field of intelligent systems, from designing predictive models to creating innovative AI-driven applications. With a combination of technical mastery and hands-on industry practice, the degree positions students to contribute to the Australian and global technology sector across industries such as business, health, defence, and public service.
