ABOUT UNIVERSITY

Flinders University, officially established as The Flinders University of South Australia, is a public research university based in Adelaide, South Australia, with additional campuses in Tonsley, Adelaide’s central business district, Renmark, Alice Springs, and Darwin. Its main campus is at Bedford Park, about 12 km south of Adelaide’s city centre. Founded in 1966, the university was named after British navigator Matthew Flinders, who explored much of Australia’s coastline in the early 19th century. As of 2022, it had an enrolment of 25,247 students.The university’s origins trace back to the late 1950s, when the University of Adelaide’s North Terrace campus reached capacity. In 1960, Premier Thomas Playford allocated 150 hectares of government land at Burbank (now Bedford Park) for a second campus. Planning began in 1961 under principal-designate Peter Karmel, who envisioned the new institution as independent from the University of Adelaide, free to innovate and unbound by tradition. Construction commenced in 1962 with a £3.8 million grant from the Australian Universities Commission. Architect Geoff Harrison, alongside Hassell, McConnell and Partners, designed a campus to support up to 6,000 students, with potential for future expansion.
