COURSE CURRICULUM

The Design degree prepares students for evolving industries by introducing core design disciplines including graphic, spatial, and digital interaction. It emphasizes hands-on, studio-based learning where students develop user-friendly, functional products and interfaces while collaborating with professionals like engineers, marketers, and project managers. Over three years, students complete 240 credit points of core units and 120 credit points of electives, with the option to specialize through minors or elective sequences such as Photography or Visual Arts. In the first year, foundational units cover design principles, digital design, prototyping, and design thinking. The second year focuses on design studies and studios in experience design and service and system design. The final year advances studio practice with two major design studios and explores future design trends. Electives allow students to tailor their education with courses across the university, including psychology, marketing, communication, writing, and Indigenous studies. Notably, students build a professional portfolio through projects with real clients, preparing them for careers in traditional design roles as well as emerging fields like Service Design, Human-Centered Design, and Experience (UX) Design. The course promotes collaboration, creativity, and technical skills to transform industry practices. Opportunities for professional internships and placements enhance practical learning. Recommended electives also include subjects in media, communication, and arts, broadening students’ understanding of interdisciplinary approaches.
