COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Teaching (Primary) consists of 16 credit points of core units, supported by several compulsory zero-credit-point modules completed during the course. Students undertake Academic Integrity and Respect at Deakin in their first study period, along with the Australian Literacy Test, Australian Numeracy Test, Trauma Informed Practice, and Science Education Lab Safety Induction. The curriculum develops comprehensive knowledge of primary education through units covering learning and cognitive development, health and physical education, arts education, mathematics and numeracy pedagogy, science of reading, English and literacy for lower and upper primary, humanities, science and technology education, and culturally responsive teaching through Indigenous perspectives. Students also explore research-informed teaching practices, curriculum design, and evidence-based instructional strategies to support diverse learners. A major emphasis is placed on professional experience through a sequence of supervised placement units, including Orientation to the Teaching Profession, Building Capacity in Professional Experience, and Transition to the Profession units. These placements provide extensive classroom experience where students apply theoretical knowledge, develop teaching confidence, and refine classroom management and communication skills under professional supervision. The integrated course structure ensures graduates are well prepared to meet national teaching standards and possess the practical skills, pedagogical knowledge, and professional capabilities required for successful careers as primary school teachers in Australia and beyond.
