COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of International Relations (Professional) consists of 16 credit points, including a compulsory zero-credit-point Academic Integrity and Respect at Deakin unit completed in the first study period, 6 credit points of core units and 10 credit points of pathway, elective or specialisation units. The course structure is designed to develop advanced knowledge of global affairs, international politics and professional practice. Core units include The United Nations and International Organisation, Human Rights in World Politics, International Relations Theory, Contemporary International Politics, Security and Strategy, and Internship A. Through these units, students gain a deeper understanding of international institutions, global governance, human rights challenges, security issues and the theoretical frameworks used to analyse world politics. The pathway component allows students to tailor their studies according to career goals through options such as a Minor Thesis for a PhD pathway, Research Paper for a non-PhD pathway, or Professional Experience pathway. Elective and specialisation choices provide further opportunities to explore specific areas of international relations and develop research or professional skills. This flexible structure prepares graduates for careers in government, diplomacy, international organisations, policy analysis, research institutions and roles requiring strong global awareness and strategic decision-making abilities.
