The Master of Data Science provides a flexible study structure requiring students to complete 8, 12, or 16 credit points, depending on their entry qualifications, previous study, and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) based on professional experience. The full 16-credit-point program begins with the compulsory zero-credit unit, DAI001 Academic Integrity and Respect at Deakin, completed during the first study period to establish essential academic and professional practices. The course is structured into four progressive parts that build comprehensive data science expertise. Part A focuses on Foundation Information Technology studies, comprising four core units that develop fundamental computing skills in areas such as object-oriented development, database fundamentals, software requirements analysis and modelling, and web technologies and development. Part B covers Fundamental Data Analytics studies, providing students with essential knowledge and techniques for analysing, managing, and interpreting data. Part C develops advanced Mastery Data Science skills through specialised core units in areas such as machine learning, data modelling, statistical analysis, and advanced data science applications. Part D consists of Data Science capstone studies, enabling students to apply their knowledge to real-world data challenges through practical projects. Students also complete one level 7 SIT or MIS-coded course elective, allowing further specialisation. This structure combines information technology foundations, analytics expertise, advanced data science knowledge, and applied learning to prepare graduates for professional roles in data-driven industries.
