COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Communication offers a flexible study structure requiring students to complete 8, 12, or 16 credit points, depending on their entry pathway, previous qualifications, and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) based on professional experience. The full 16-credit-point program begins with the compulsory zero-credit unit, DAI001 Academic Integrity and Respect at Deakin, completed during the first trimester to establish essential academic and ethical practices. The course includes four credit points of core communication units that develop fundamental knowledge and skills in communication theory, research, and professional practice. Core studies include Communication Concepts and Applied Research Methods for Communication, providing students with the analytical frameworks and research skills needed to understand and address contemporary communication challenges. Students then complete an eight-credit-point specialisation, consisting of three specialisation-specific units, one cross-disciplinary unit, and a four-credit-point professional capstone program. The capstone includes a mandatory research project focused on a topic relevant to the chosen specialisation, allowing students to apply their knowledge to industry or scholarly contexts. In addition, students undertake four credit points of course electives selected from available specialisations, enabling further customisation of their studies. This structure combines theoretical understanding, practical application, research capability, and specialised expertise, preparing graduates for diverse careers in communication, media, public relations, advertising, journalism, and digital industries.
