COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Zoology and Animal Science at Deakin University requires students to complete 24 credit points to graduate. This includes 18 core units that provide essential knowledge and practical skills in zoology, animal biology, and ecological science. Alongside these, students must complete a set of compulsory non-credit modules in their first year: Academic Integrity and Respect at Deakin (DAI001), Laboratory and Fieldwork Safety Induction (SLE010), and Career Tools for Employability (STP010). These modules ensure students are prepared for academic success, safe scientific practice, and future employment.To complete the remaining 6 credit points, students can choose between one minor (4 credit points) plus two elective units, or six open elective units that align with their interests or career goals. This flexibility allows students to tailor the course toward specific areas within or outside the field of zoology. The course structure also ensures academic depth and progression, with a maximum of 10 credit points permitted at level 1 and a minimum of 6 credit points required at level 3.As a full-time student, the typical study load is four credit points per trimester across two trimesters annually, allowing for a three-year completion time. This structured yet adaptable format, combined with practical fieldwork, lab sessions, and industry placement opportunities, ensures students graduate with both theoretical expertise and hands-on experience in zoology and animal science.
