COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Vision Science/Master of Optometry requires students to complete 40 credit points, including compulsory Academic Integrity and Respect at Deakin and Laboratory and Fieldwork Safety Induction Program units, along with 40 credit points of core units. The course is delivered at the Waurn Ponds campus in Geelong and combines scientific foundations, clinical optometry knowledge and professional practice. In the first year, students build essential knowledge in health sciences, data, optics, cells and genetics, science of vision, clinical optics, ocular structure, ocular function and the business aspects of optometry. Students also develop chemistry and laboratory skills required for professional practice. The second year focuses on advanced health and vision sciences and introduces clinical optometry principles and practice through practical learning. In the third year, students undertake advanced optometric studies, developing expertise in diagnosing and managing vision conditions. The final stage of the course includes community optometry units, where students apply their skills in real-world clinical settings. Through progressive learning, clinical training and supervised practice, the course prepares graduates with the knowledge and professional capabilities required to work as optometrists and meet registration requirements in Australia and New Zealand. This integrated structure provides a complete pathway from vision science foundations to advanced optometry practice.
