COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Social Work requires students to complete 32 credit points, including the compulsory Academic Integrity and Respect at Deakin module, 29 core units and 3 open elective units, with limited level 1 elective options. The course structure develops a strong foundation in sociology, social work theory, health, human behaviour, public policy, human rights and social justice. In the first year, students study Aboriginal studies, sociology, social work practice theories, health and psychology concepts to understand individuals and communities. The second year focuses on public policy, community development, research practice, social work methods, ethics and legal contexts, while preparing students for professional placements. The third year includes Social Work Field Education, critical social work practice, social policy, research and organisational contexts. In the final year, students complete advanced social work practice units, further electives and a second field education placement, gaining valuable professional experience. Students who meet eligibility requirements may undertake the Bachelor of Social Work (Honours), which includes additional research-focused units and an honours research project. This comprehensive structure prepares graduates with practical skills, ethical understanding and professional capabilities to support individuals, families and communities across diverse social service settings.
