COURSE CURRICULUM

To complete Deakin University’s Bachelor of Nutrition Science (Dietetics Pathway), students must successfully complete 24 credit points, including 18 credit points of core units, four credit points of HSN-coded nutrition and food electives, and two credit points of open elective units. The course begins with compulsory zero-credit-point units, including DAI001 Academic Integrity and Respect at Deakin, HSN010 Food and Nutrition Laboratory Safety, SLE010 Laboratory and Fieldwork Safety Induction Program and HSE010 Exercise and Sport Laboratory Safety, which prepare students for laboratory and practical learning. Early studies establish foundations in food, nutrition, health, anatomy, physiology, sustainable food systems, chemistry and food science. As students progress, they develop advanced knowledge in nutritional physiology, biochemistry, human physiology, biochemical metabolism, lifespan nutrition, diet and disease, food policy, population nutrition and food intake assessment. The course structure integrates scientific understanding with practical nutrition skills, preparing students for professional pathways in dietetics and health-related industries. In the final year, students complete the Food and Nutrition Practicum, gaining valuable industry experience and applying their knowledge in real-world settings. Students can also enhance their expertise through nutrition and food electives while maintaining academic progression requirements, including a maximum of 10 credit points at level 1 and a minimum of six credit points at level 3. This structure supports graduates in developing the scientific, analytical and practical skills required for careers in nutrition, health promotion and dietetics.
