COURSE CURRICULUM

To complete Deakin University’s Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Midwifery, students must successfully complete 32 credit points that integrate nursing knowledge, midwifery practice and shared healthcare education. The course begins with the compulsory zero-credit-point unit, DAI001 Academic Integrity and Respect at Deakin, completed during the first study period. Students undertake 12 credit points of core nursing units, 11 credit points of core midwifery units and nine credit points of units aligned across both degrees. Early studies establish foundations in anatomy and physiology, evidence-based practice, healthcare quality and safety, person-centred assessment and child and adolescent care. As students progress, nursing studies develop expertise in areas such as acute care, mental health, chronic illness, primary healthcare, aged care and comprehensive clinical practice. Midwifery studies focus on pregnancy care, labour and birth, postnatal care, complex midwifery, neonatal challenges, emergency care and contemporary midwifery practice. The course includes advanced units addressing quality and safety in healthcare, medicines management, cultural awareness, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, and professional practice. Through a combination of theoretical learning and extensive clinical experiences, students develop the skills required to provide safe, ethical and evidence-based care. This integrated structure prepares graduates for professional registration and careers as nurses and midwives across diverse healthcare settings in Australia and internationally.
