COURSE CURRICULUM

To complete Deakin University’s Bachelor of Marine Science, students must successfully complete 24 credit points that provide a strong foundation in marine science, practical skills and specialised knowledge. The course includes compulsory zero-credit-point units designed to support academic, safety and professional development, including DAI001 Academic Integrity and Respect at Deakin, SLE010 Laboratory and Fieldwork Safety Induction Program, and STP010 Career Tools for Employability. Students undertake 12 credit points of core units that develop essential knowledge in marine biology, ecology, ocean systems, conservation, environmental processes and scientific methods. They also complete one major worth six credit points, allowing them to specialise in an area of marine science aligned with their interests and career goals. The remaining six credit points can be structured through either one minor worth four credit points combined with two credit points of open elective units, or six credit points of open elective units, providing flexibility to broaden their studies. To ensure academic progression, students may complete a maximum of 10 credit points at level 1, must undertake at least 14 credit points across levels 2 and 3, and complete a minimum of six credit points at level 3. This course structure develops advanced scientific understanding, practical marine skills and professional capabilities, preparing graduates for careers in marine research, conservation, environmental management, fisheries, aquaculture and related fields.
