COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Early Childhood Education includes a structured study plan across three years, combining foundational knowledge, professional skills and practical teaching preparation. In the first trimester, students must complete DAI001 Academic Integrity and Respect at Deakin, a compulsory 0-credit-point unit that introduces academic expectations and responsible learning practices. During the first year, students also complete ETI010 Trauma Informed Practice and ESL010 Science Education Lab Safety Induction, both compulsory 0-credit-point units designed to support safe and inclusive teaching approaches. Core units throughout the course develop essential understanding of early childhood education, including children’s development, curriculum design, play-based learning and effective teaching practices. Students explore how to create supportive early learning environments, understand children’s health and wellbeing needs, and develop professional skills for working with young learners. Units such as Introduction to the Teaching Profession and Introduction to Professional Practice and Infant/Toddler Pedagogy prepare students for their future roles as educators by connecting theory with practical classroom experiences. The course also focuses on building strong partnerships with families and communities through collaborative approaches. Through these studies, students develop the knowledge, skills and confidence required to support children’s learning, growth and development in early childhood settings.
