COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Criminology at Deakin University is a 24-credit-point program designed to provide students with a strong understanding of crime, justice systems, and the social factors influencing criminal behaviour. The course begins with the compulsory Academic Integrity and Respect at Deakin unit, followed by a balanced combination of core studies, criminology electives, and open electives. Students complete 6 credit points of core units that establish essential knowledge in criminology, including concepts related to crime, justice, research, and social responses to criminal issues. In addition, students undertake 6 credit points of criminology course elective units, allowing them to explore specialised areas and develop deeper knowledge in topics aligned with their interests and career goals. The remaining 12 credit points consist of open elective units, providing flexibility to broaden learning across different disciplines and develop complementary skills. The course structure supports progressive academic development, with a maximum of 10 credit points permitted at level 1, a minimum of 14 credit points required at level 2 or above, and at least 6 credit points required at level 3 to ensure advanced understanding. Students may also complete a maximum of 8 credit points from outside the Faculty of Arts and Education, encouraging interdisciplinary learning and preparing graduates for diverse careers in criminal justice, policy, government, intelligence, and related fields.
