COURSE CURRICULUM
The course structure of the applied psychology program is designed to progressively develop students’ foundational knowledge, research skills, and professional competencies across four years of study. In Year 1, students build a strong base in psychology and health-related practice. Semester 1 introduces foundations for professional health practice, core concepts in psychology, and the scientific and professional standards that underpin psychological practice, supported by elective study that allows early exploration of related interests. In Semester 2, students deepen their understanding of psychological foundations through studies in brain and behaviour, biostatistics and epidemiology, Indigenous cultures and health behaviours, and core psychological theory, ensuring a balanced grounding in biological, cultural, and quantitative perspectives. Year 2 focuses on psychological science and research methods alongside key applied areas. Students study experimental and correlational research methods, learning, social psychology, perception, and child development, while selecting option units that allow them to explore areas such as health psychology, mental health promotion, public health, anatomy, sustainability, or internship experiences. These units strengthen analytical thinking, research literacy, and applied understanding of behaviour across contexts. In Year 3, students engage with advanced psychological concepts and research approaches. Core studies include cognition, individual differences, abnormal psychology, qualitative and mixed research methods, community psychology, adult development, and Indigenous and cross-cultural psychology. This year emphasises critical evaluation of evidence, ethical practice, and the application of psychological knowledge to diverse communities and real-world issues. In Year 4, students complete a dedicated fourth-year pathway through either the Honours Psychology Stream or the Psychology Fourth Year Stream. This final year develops advanced research, analytical, and professional skills aligned with AQF Level 8 standards, preparing graduates for provisional registration as psychologists, entry into the workforce, or progression to further postgraduate study and specialised professional training.
